It was observed that females who take oral contraceptives had an increase in A1AT expression. This suggests that expression could be modulated by estrogen. Additionally, pregnant women had elevated levels that peaked at 34-38 weeks of gestation. Low levels of A1AT is associated with spontaneous abortion which suggests that the molecule plays an important role in a healthy pregnancy and may reduce embryotoxicity.
