The reading test has an overall score that is comprised of several constituent scores. The scores that comprise the overall score include individual scores from different types of questions and a score for understanding complex texts.

ACT Reading Passage Types

The reading section asks test takers to respond to 40 items in 35 minutes. It includes four passage units. Three of the four passage units include one long prose passage. One of the four passage units contains two shorter prose passages. 

ACT Reading Section Format

The reading test includes multiple texts with long and short passages. The texts are designed to simulate reading commonly found in first-year college courses. Questions on the reading are multiple choice.
