Activity: Demonstration of Meaningfulness in Encoding

Demonstrate how meaningfulness enhances memory encoding by completing the following steps:

  1. Read the following sentences:
    • The notes were sour because the seams split.
    • The voyage wasn't delayed because the bottle shattered.
    • The haystack was important because the cloth ripped.
  2. Look away and count backwards from 30 by threes to zero (e.g., 30, 27, 24, ..., 0).
  3. Try to write down the sentences from memory without looking back at them.
