Of the 1376 patients, 811 (58.9%) received HCQ (median duration of treatment, 5 days) and 565 (41.1%) did not. Among the patients who received HCQ, 45.8% received it in the 24 hours between their arrival at the emergency department and the start of study follow-up, and 85.9% received it within 48 hours after arriving at the emergency department. In the matched analytic sample, 811 patients received HCQ and 274 did not.

Hospital patients with acute SARS-Cov-2 had been diagnosed via NP or OP swab during hospitalization from March 7, 2020 to April 8, 2020. Excluded from the sample were patients who were intubated, who had died, or who were transferred to another department within 24 hours of being brought to the emergency department. Of the original 1446 COVID-19 patients admitted to hospital during this time, 1376 were included in the analysis.
