- There was an increase of around .023 more violent crimes per day in areas which expeinced more pollution, this translates to a 2.3% increase in violent crime in these areas

Air Pollution and Crime Rates at the Microgeographical Level

Within the city at a P<.05 value, in turn at a highly statistically significant value, the association between air pollution and crime rates is highly unlikely due to the chance,  specifically CO (Carbon Monoxides) PM10 (Particulate Matter with a diameter of less than 10 micrometers)

Air Pollution Effect on City Level Crime Rates

This study analyzed crime rates at two levels to understand if a correlation existed.
These two levels were:
- Microgeography (Within Chicago)
- City Level

Ohio State University, Columbus

In Chicago, Herrnstadt et al. compared two sides of the highway, and based on the wind's direction, one side would experience more pollution than the other. Therefore Herrnstadt et. al could compare each side's crime rates with the direction of the wind to account for underlying variables and establish a causal relationship between crime and air pollution
