A journal’s impact factor acts as a consistent predictor of whether its contents will be referenced in Wikipedia articles, and open access journals are 47% more likely to be cited in Wikipedia than non-open access journals.

Amplifying the impact of open access: Wikipedia and the diffusion of science

- Collected 250 high impact journals from 26 fields (due to some articles falling into more than one category, a total of 4,721 distinct journals were obtained); 335 journals were open access
- Calculated impact factor using the 2013 SCImago Journal Rank (SJR) impact factor that also considers self-citations and the varying reputations of journals
- Wikipedia citations were retrieved from the November 15, 2014 database and sorted using Wikipedia’s cite-journal template (311,947 “cite-journal” tags in total)
- 203,536 tags were journals indexed in Scopus; 32,361 articles were linked to Scopus journals covering the 250 chosen research fields
