Analysis of a Suboptimal Consumption Choice

An individual has an endowment of $100 to be allocated between consumption today and consumption in the future. The only way to save for the future is to store cash, which means for every dollar not consumed today, they will have one dollar available in the future. This individual's optimal choice is to consume $60 today and $40 in the future.

Consider an alternative, feasible consumption plan where the individual consumes $80 today and saves $20 for the future. Analyze why this alternative plan is not optimal. In your analysis, explain the relationship between the individual's personal willingness to trade between present and future consumption and the actual trade-off available to them at this specific point ($80, $20).
