Analysis of Surplus Division Scenarios

A farmer and a landowner collaborate to grow a crop, which generates a joint surplus of 100 bushels of wheat compared to what they could produce separately. The farmer's next best alternative is to work on a different farm for a wage equivalent to 40 bushels of wheat.

Analyze and compare the following two scenarios for dividing the surplus:

  1. The landowner has all the bargaining power and offers the farmer the minimum possible to secure the agreement.
  2. The farmer and landowner agree to split the joint surplus equally.

For each scenario, calculate the farmer's total compensation and economic rent. Conclude by explaining how the distribution of the gains from cooperation differs between the two scenarios.
