Short Answer

Analyzing a Landowner's Incentive

A landowner is evaluating the work arrangement with a tenant farmer. Currently, the farmer has 12 hours of free time per day. At this point, the farmer is willing to sacrifice 4 bushels of grain for one additional hour of free time. The landowner calculates that if the farmer works one hour less, the total harvest will only decrease by 2.5 bushels. Analyze this situation from the landowner's perspective. Explain why an opportunity exists for the landowner to increase their own share of the harvest and what specific change to the farmer's free time they should propose.
