Analyzing a Statement on CO2 Emissions
A world leader makes the following statement in a speech: 'Our nation has achieved a major victory for the climate. We have successfully stopped the growth of our annual CO2 emissions. Our emissions are now stable and are no longer increasing each year.' Critically analyze this statement. Explain why stabilizing the rate of emissions at its current, high level is insufficient to stop the increase of the total amount of CO2 in the atmosphere. Use the distinction between a flow (an amount per unit of time) and a stock (a total accumulated amount) in your explanation.
