Analyzing a 19th-Century Economic Prediction

In the mid-19th century, a prominent economist predicted that due to increasing worker education and political empowerment, the traditional firm structure where owners hire employees would eventually be replaced by worker-owned partnerships and cooperatives. Analyze at least two potential economic or social factors from the 20th or 21st centuries that could explain why this prediction has not fully come to pass.
