Aversive conditioning is a form of counterconditioning that utilizes a negative or unpleasant stimulus to eliminate an undesirable behavior. This technique is commonly applied to address addictive habits like smoking, nail biting, or excessive drinking. The process involves pairing the unwanted behavior with an unpleasant experience, such as a bad taste or a mild electric shock. Through repeated association, the individual learns to connect the behavior with the negative stimulus, which ultimately helps them to cease the habit.

Aversive Conditioning

Exposure therapy is a therapeutic technique where a client is presented with a feared object, situation, or activity in a safe environment, with the goal of reducing their fear and avoidance through habituation, or getting used to it. This method can be implemented through real-life exposure (in vivo), imagination, or virtual reality. First reported by Mary Cover Jones in 1924, this approach is used to treat various anxiety-related conditions like phobias, PTSD, and OCD. It works by facilitating processes such as habituation, extinction, building self-efficacy, and emotional processing.
