Case Study

Analyzing Agricultural Land-Use Scenarios

A large tract of forested land has been cleared for agriculture. Two distinct proposals for its use are being considered:

  • Proposal 1: Convert the entire area into large-scale cattle ranches for beef production.
  • Proposal 2: Develop the land for intensive cultivation of a crop that requires significant and repeated application of nitrogen-based fertilizers.

Analyze the primary non-carbon dioxide (non-CO2) greenhouse gas that would be a major concern for each proposal. For each proposal, identify the gas and explain its specific source.
