Analyzing Competing Interests in a Business Decision

A manufacturing company has earned an unexpectedly large surplus of $5 million this year. The leadership is debating three potential uses for this money: (1) Reinvesting it all into new, more efficient factory equipment; (2) Distributing it as a one-time cash bonus to all non-managerial employees; or (3) Using it to build a new, luxurious executive leadership wing with upgraded offices and amenities for the management team.

Analyze this situation. For each of the three options, identify which group within the firm (owners, managers, or employees) would most strongly support it and explain the reasoning behind their preference. Finally, explain how this entire scenario illustrates a fundamental conflict within a firm, even when the firm is successful.
