Analyzing Contrasting Economic Histories

Imagine you are shown a graph plotting the average income (GDP per capita) for a wide range of countries over the last thousand years. For the vast majority of this period, all countries show very low and flat income levels. However, starting about 200-300 years ago, the lines for a few countries suddenly bend sharply upwards, indicating a dramatic and continuous rise in average income. The lines for many other countries, however, remain flat and low. Analyze the two distinct and contrasting narratives about global economic development that are simultaneously presented in this single graph.
