Analyzing the Surplus-Maximizing Condition under Coercion

A landowner has complete control over a tenant farmer's work hours and provides the farmer with just enough resources to survive. The landowner's goal is to maximize their own surplus (the total output produced by the farmer minus the resources given to the farmer). Explain the economic reasoning behind why the landowner's surplus is maximized at the point where the rate at which the farmer's labor can be transformed into output is exactly equal to the rate at which the farmer is willing to trade free time for output (at their survival level of well-being). In your explanation, analyze what would happen to the landowner's surplus if these two rates were not equal.
