Analyzing Worker Responses to Wage Increases

When hourly wages rise, some individuals choose to work more hours, while others choose to work fewer hours. This means their optimal amount of free time can either decrease or increase in response to the wage change.

Analyze the two distinct economic decision-making processes that could lead to these opposite choices. For each of the two cases:

  1. Describe the worker's thought process regarding the trade-off between earning more money and having more free time.
  2. State whether the mathematical derivative that represents the change in optimal free time with respect to a change in wage would be positive or negative.
