Leptin is a satiety hormone produced by fat cells and released into the bloodstream. It signals fullness to the brain, helping to regulate eating behavior by shutting it off. Leptin receptors are found in various brain regions, including the choroid plexus, cortex, and several hypothalamic nuclei. Genetic defects in the gene responsible for leptin production can cause a false underreporting of body fat, leading to overeating and obesity.

Leptin

A powerful appetite stimulant that is released into the bloodstream by endocrine cells of the stomach. Levels of ghrelin rise during fasting and drop after eating. Treatment of increasing ghrelin levels shows rapid increase in appetite in humans and animals.

Ghrelin

The small peptide is screeted by the cells within the small and large intestines. IT has low levels in the blood before eating, but rises rapidly after consuming meals. Injections of the peptide can curb appetites in humans and animals. Low average levels of the peptide are associated with obesity. This suggests that PPY (3-36) acts as a appetite-suppressing stimuli to the hypothalamus.

PYY (3-36)

There are two sets of arcuate neurons with opposit effects. The groups are called POMC neurons and NPY neurons. The system also uses hormones from the Arcuate nucleus to gather and distribute information.

The Arcuate Appetite System

Arcuate neurons that produce peptides in order to act as satiety neurons. These inhibit appetite and increase the metabolism.
- pro-opiomelanocrotin (PMOC)
- cocaine- and amphetamine-regulated transcript (CART)

POMC neurons

Neurons that act as hunger neurons, stimulating the appetite and inhibiting satiety signals from POMC neurons. They also reduce the metabolism which promotes weight gain
The main peptides secreted by these neurons are 
- neuropeptide Y (NPY)
- agouti-related peptide (AgRP)

NPY neurons

Contains a specialized appetite controler that is coverned by levels of hormones. Some of the hormones are isulin, leptic, PYY(3-36), ghrelin, and CCK.

The hypothalamus is a critical brain region for regulating eating, serving as a primary site for integrating the body's various hunger and satiety signals. Its activity is crucial for controlling metabolic rate, food intake, and body weight, and it also regulates hormones related to energy balance. Damage to the hypothalamus can severely disrupt eating behavior, leading to conditions like chronic hunger or satiety.
