Arithmetic Operation Symbols

To write algebraically, we use operation symbols along with numbers and variables. The four basic arithmetic operations and their common notations are:

  • Addition: a+ba + b represents the sum of aa and bb.
  • Subtraction: aba - b represents the difference of aa and bb.
  • Multiplication: aba \cdot b, abab, (a)(b)(a)(b), (a)b(a)b, or a(b)a(b) represents the product of aa and bb.
  • Division: a÷ba \div b, a/ba/b, or ab\frac{a}{b} represents the quotient of aa and bb.
