Anatomy of the Visual System

The cornea is the transparent outer layer of the eye that serves as a protective barrier between the inner eye and the external world. It also plays a crucial role in focusing the light waves that enter the eye.

Cornea

- The lens helps focus the image on the retina created by the cornea.
- Focus is changed by changing the shape of the lens
- Changing the focus is used to focus on further or closer objects.

Lens

- Ciliary muscles contract and release to change the shape of the lens
- This helps the lens focus imagine on the retina
- They are made of smooth muscle
- They are attached to zonular fibers and control the length of them by contracting and relaxing

Ciliary Muscles

The retina is the light-sensitive lining at the back of the eye. It is composed of several layers of cells, including photoreceptors (rods and cones) and ganglion cells. When light enters the eye, it must pass through the layers of ganglion cells and other neurons before reaching the photoreceptors, which are located at the very back of the retina. The photoreceptors convert light into neural signals. A central area of the retina called the fovea is densely packed with cones and is responsible for sharp, detailed vision.

Retina

The fovea is a small indentation in the retina where the lens focuses images to achieve the sharpest vision. It is characterized by a high density of specialized photoreceptor cells known as cones.

Optic nerve is located at the back of the eye. It is responsible for transporting visual signals from the retina to the brain.

Optic Nerve

The iris is the colored portion of the eye containing muscles that control the size of the pupil. By adjusting the pupil's diameter, the iris regulates the amount of light that enters the eye.

Iris

The pupil is the small opening in the eye through which light passes. Its size changes in response to varying light levels and emotional arousal. In low light, the pupil dilates (expands) to allow more light in, whereas in high light, it constricts (shrinks) to reduce light entry.

Pupil

The structures of the eye can be grouped based on their general position. Structures like the cornea, pupil, iris, and lens are located in the anterior (front) portion of the eye. Conversely, the retina, fovea, and optic nerve are found in the posterior (back) region.
