An analytic modeling study evaluated SARS-CoV-2 screening strategies for an 80-day abbreviated college semester. The hypothetical cohort included 4,990 uninfected students and 10 with undetected asymptomatic infections. Assuming a symptomatic case fatality risk of 0.05% and a 30% probability that infection leads to observable symptoms, the model tested screening frequencies (every 1, 2, 3, and 7 days), costs (\$10 to \$50 per test), and varying test sensitivities and specificities. The study found that screening every two days, combined with strict behavioral interventions, was the most effective strategy, even when using rapid, inexpensive, and poorly sensitive tests.
