In general there is not thought to be an increased risk for asthmatic individuals. In China and Italy, there were low rates of asthma found in current patients. It is worth noting that New York's rates were higher, around a 9% prevalence. The authors note a possibility that the body's reaction to asthma, as well as certain medications used to treat asthma, may in fact work to fight COVID-19.

COPD is a common and preventable dysfunction of the lung resulting to a limitation of airflow. There were 251 million cases of COPD in 2016, and 3.51 million deaths due to COPD in 2015 alone, making it the third leading cause of death according to WHO.  COPD is commonly exacerbated by viral infections (like COVID-19).
