The inclusion of cues that indicate when or where the target will occur allows the measurement of alerting and orienting. These measures are used to quantify efficiency in each of the three networks that support the individual components of attention.


How attentional network testing allows the measurement of alerting and orienting

The attention network test uses an arrow pointing left or right as a target. The target is surrounded by flankers, and subtracting reaction times to congruent stimuli from reaction times to incongruent stimuli  (those on the opposite side of the screen indicated by the arrow produces a measure of the time to resolve conflict.
