Elements can have attributes, they provide addition information about the element. They also provide more information to the browser about the properties of the tag that contains those attributes. Attributes always go in the opening tag of an element (never the closing tag). Attributes mostly follow this pattern attributeName (one word) followed by an equal sign = The value goes in quotes, and may have one or more words.

2 types of HTML tags, first, Structural tags create a block on the page. Anything that comes after a structural tag, will be in a new block. Examples include the paragraph tag (<p> </p>) or the header tag (<header> </header>). There are considerably more structural tags than phrasing tags. Second, a phrasing, or inline element. It does not create a new block, but does provide some meaning to the text inside the element. For example, to make a word bolded, you would include the inline tag, <strong> </strong> to emphasize any words. Also, some tags are self closing, for example, an image is an image. It can not have an element inside of it, so it does not have a closing </img> tag.

Tags used for html could be self closing as well since it does not have any elements inside of them. Examples of self closing tags include <img>, <br>, <hr> and <input>.
