Automatic Processing of Social Categories

When forming a first impression of a stranger, individuals automatically process three primary pieces of information: race, gender, and age. While secondary characteristics like friendly expressions, height, or clothing are also important, the social categories of race, gender, and age are prioritized because they provide a wealth of information about an individual, although this information is frequently based on stereotypes.
