Biological indicators in alcohol use vulnerability and initiation
In relation to morphology, research has reported that; the examination of the volume of the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC), which is believed to be associated with impulsivity and emotional regulation, showed decreased volume. Especially, in individuals who were part of vulnerable populations. More specifically, the study found a significant correlation between lower volume in the right brain region and genetic variations in the serotonin transporter (5-HTT) and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) genes. Additionally, higher white matter ratios were positively associated with self-control, as measured by self-report.
