Sociodemographics such as sexual orientation are significant factors to consider in understanding alcohol consumption. Evidence suggests that Alcohol Use Disorders (AUDs) are more common among sexual minority (lesbian, gay, bisexual, also known as LGB) individuals when compared to the heterosexual population. However, little research has focused specifically on bisexual alcohol consumption and addiction, despite differences.

Sexual orientation encompasses a variety of identities based on the gender or sex a person is attracted to. Heterosexual (straight) individuals are attracted to people of a different gender or sex. Lesbian and gay individuals are attracted to people of the same gender or sex. Bisexual individuals experience attraction to their own gender as well as another gender. Pansexual individuals experience attraction regardless of sex, gender identity, or gender expression. Asexual individuals experience little or no sexual attraction.

Lesbianism has competing definitions, but the most widely understood meaning is romantic and/or sexual attraction exclusively to women, by women.

While “gay” was at one point used just to describe romantic and/or sexual attraction exclusively to men, by men, it has grown to also be used by both men and women who are attracted to people of the same gender.

Asexuality is defined by a lack of sexual attraction to anyone or having little to no interest in sexual activities, although asexuality includes a spectrum of identities.

Queer is used as an umbrella term to describe sexuality and gender identities outside of those prescribed by society (for example, those that are not cisgender or heterosexual).
