Impulsivity as a symptom of ADHD in adults with ADHD likely has a large impact on the likelihood of motor vehicle incidents, as a lack of self-control could cause one to make more rash or reckless decisions on the road.

A study done at Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health studied the likelihood of vehicular accidents in older individuals with ADHD. It was found that ADHD was associated with a 7% increase in hard-breaking events, a 102% increase in traffic ticket incidents, and 74% increase in self-reported crashes.

Hospital admissions as a result of accidents have been linked to the presence of adult ADHD. It is possible that the presence of higher postural sway in adults with ADHD combined with common symptoms of inattentiveness and hyperactivity could be contributing to the frequency of these accidents as well as the perceived clumsiness of these patients.
