The use of conventions and methods of identifying relationships between terms. There are different ways that a semantic link between terms can be indicated.

The process of cataloging includes the use of metadata, which is data that describes information resources.  Metadata makes working with and finding resources easier.

Types of Cataloging

A data format that arose from a nearly four-decade-old endeavor led by the Library of Congress. It provides the means for computers to communicate, utilize, and understand bibliographic data, and its data elements constitute the basis of modern-day library catalogues. 

Machine-Readable Cataloging 

Standards on what needs to be included in metadata and how said metadata is organized in a system. Standards vary from type of institution: libraries, museums and archives all use different standards of metadata.
