The high rate of suicide in schizophrenia is partly due to our inadequate (nonsystematic) care system on which patients are forced to rely on. These are preventable but not much prevention nor improvements are done. 
e.g. The patient who is treated inadequately with medications and then told that nothing more can be done. / The patient who is doing nicely on medication until another doctor reduces it and begins insight-oriented psychotherapy,

The largest single contributor to the excess death rate in individuals with schizophrenia is suicide. 10-13% of schizophrenics' premature death is due to suicide completion.

Relation of Suicide among People with Schizophrenia 

Depression represents the single most important cause of suicide among people with schizophrenia. Most persons with schizophrenia who commit suicide do so within the first ten years of their illness. Those who are at the highest risk of attempting suicide have; a remitting and relapsing course, good insight, a poor response to medication, are socially isolated, hopeless about the future, and have a gross discrepancy between their earlier achievements in life and their current level of function. 

Any patient with these characteristics and associated depression should be considered at high risk for suicide  

Cause of Suicide among People with Schizophrenia: Depression causing Suicide

During the stage of acute psychosis, there is the possibility that people with schizophrenia can commit suicide accidentally. Could cause by hallucinations but most of them are intended where they are often carefully planned by the person.
