These images include few humans, but sometimes human heads or genitalia appear in isolation. Hand stencils and handprints are characteristic of the earlier periods, as in the Gargas cave in the French Pyrenees. A lot of those images were incised, painted, or sculpted on the rock surfaces. 

Characteristics of Cave Art 

About 35,000  years ago, most prehistoric sites were discovered in Spain and southwestern France. Scholars divided early humans into several groups based on several characteristics. The most influential are the Aurignacians and Magdalenian.

 All art produced in preliterate, prehistorical cultures beginning somewhere in very late geological history, and generally continuing until that culture either develops writing or other methods of record-keeping, or makes significant contact with another culture that has, and that makes some record of major historical events. At this point ancient art begins, for the older literate cultures.
