Both fields fails to account for economic, social, and political factors that contribute to public health disparities. Some challenges in uniting the two fields to account for public health disparities are:

- how to increase attention to public health effects of land uses
- how to develop a coordinated, multidisciplinary approach toward eliminating health disparities
- how to create an urban health agenda which addresses the socioeconomic position and social determinants of health in urban areas
