Characteristics of Down syndrome
Down syndrome presents with a wide variety of physical, cognitive, and developmental characteristics, as well as several common comorbidities. Because the syndrome is caused by atypical chromosomal composition—specifically an extra copy of chromosome 21—these characteristic manifestations affect multiple developmental pathways throughout an individual's life.
