“Chavismo” refers to the political ideology, alliance, and regime of Hugo Chávez. Although initially an alliance of left- and right-wing political leaders, chavismo has become more leftist over time. Chavismo—as the name suggests—is steeped in the legacy of Hugo Chávez and thus remains popular among some leftists despite often being critiqued as authoritarian.
