Recently, research has suggested that delayed mental development was observed in 15% of selected patients and another 45% experienced dissociation in mental development. Furthermore, impairments were significantly more frequent in groups with onset of psychopathological disorders as well as high performance in the primary grades. In all,tThe age of onset and the duration of the persistence of psychopathological disorders determine the level of negative changes formed at the stage of disease preceding onset of distinct clinical symptoms of STD, while age at the time of manifestation of disease affects the predominant positive disorders.

While there are many factors attributing to the onset of SPD, one that is particularly referenced is the idea that Schizotypal Personality Disorder should be classified under the schizophrenia Spectrum of disorders. Originally, the concept of SPD emerged from observations of personality characteristics common in relatives of schizophrenic patients. Building off of this idea, researchers have called attention to modifiable ELF for SPD and inform readers of possible future interventions to reduce developmental risks, such as parent‐training or environmental enrichment programs

Childhood experiences

The increased focus on reducing frank psychosis in the clinical high risk for psychosis population may have inadvertently diverted attention from the identification of schizotypy and mapping its clinical trajectories, and may have reduced interest in evaluating specific therapies for this population. Further long-term longitudinal studies, ideally from childhood and adolescence, are required to map possible stages of schizotypal disorder and to test treatments according to stage of disorder evolution.
