Case Study

Choosing a Visualization for Income Differences

An economic analyst is preparing a presentation on income differences within a company. They initially study a small team of 5 employees and create two visualizations to show the absolute difference in income between every possible pair of individuals.

  • Visualization 1: A diagram where each employee is a dot, and a line is drawn connecting every pair of dots. Each line is labeled with the income difference for that pair.
  • Visualization 2: A 5x5 grid where each cell at the intersection of a row and column shows the income difference between the two corresponding employees.

The analyst now needs to expand the study to include all 300 employees in the company. Which visualization method should they choose for the larger group, and why? Justify your decision by critiquing the suitability of both methods for the expanded study.
