In clinical psychologist programs, disabilities studies provide insight into working with individuals with disabilities. The disabilities studies can provide more elaborate information about specific diagnoses and conditions that include case studies  that can be used in the real work setting. 

There is clinical and vocational rehabilitation counseling involved with individuals with disabilities that helps the workforce such as helping with work placement, resume, job research and many other factors of that specific job setting. In Massachusetts it's called the Rehabilitation Commision or its new name called Massability.

Only 11% of programs back in the day had disabilities studies in programs for students.  

In a study by Olkin that is included in the article it states “Results indicated that 9 years after passage of the ADA, the modal number of required courses on disability was still zero, as it was in 1989. In 1999, only 11% of programs had at least one course on disability (less than in 1989). Further, this disability course was most likely to be on “exceptional” children, learning disabilities, or mental retardation—courses that generally reflect the medical model of disability. Only 7 out of 210 programs had a course on psychosocial aspects of disability (i.e., courses that were more likely to reflect the new paradigm of disability)”(Olkin 296–304).
