The clinical staging model is an advanced diagnosis method that aims to promote early intervention and organize data into a logical framework. It recommends treatments with lesser risks during the initial stages of illness, focusing on managing short-term symptoms and preventing disease progression.

The term clinical disease is used to define the stage of the disease at which signs and symptoms begin to appear. This is used to separate from the stage of (subclinical) disease that only indicates a state of having been inflicted upon the patient. 

Clinical Disease Stage

Rate scale:
1. High-risk, asymptomatic=0
2. Family history and non-specific symptoms/subthreshold manic symptoms=1; 
3. Full hypo/manic episode=2; 
4. Recurrent/chronic illness with functional impairment=3-4

Youth in stages 0-1 do not already meet the criteria for a BP spectrum or mood disorder, which means current treatment for BP may not work well on them.
