Due to the ability of a cohort study to establish an association between a characteristic to an outcome, it is commonly used in the medical field. As a result, the characteristic tends to be an exposure to something (i.e. smoking) and the outcome is often a state of disease (i.e. the participant develops the disease or does not develop the disease).
