To assess group learning speed, each person in a group was required to select a number from five options. Peoples' points were determined by their choice and the choices made by other group members, guided by a "payoff matrix." Unlike the prisoner's dilemma, this game encouraged cooperation rather than competition. While most groups initially struggled, those with higher collective intelligence showed a faster learning curve over ten rounds. They became better at implicitly coordinating their choices based on past rounds, resulting in significantly higher point totals compared to other groups. Thus, groups with greater collective intelligence demonstrated the ability to learn faster, as indicated by this task.

Measuring the Relationship Between Collective Intelligence and Speed of Learning

General intelligence predicts the speed at which someone learns. For example, someone with high general intelligence will likely learn something faster than someone with lower general intelligence. It was tested to see if the same is true of groups with high collective intelligence. It was found that groups with higher collective intelligence learn things faster than groups with lower collective intelligence.

Collective Intelligence and Speed of Learing

In this study, collective intelligence is defined as a specific group’s ability to perform well across a range of different tasks. The collective intelligence of a group is a significant predictor of its performance on these tasks, while the average individual intelligence of group members is, surprisingly, not. Overall, collective intelligence is thought to emerge from both bottom-up and top-down processes. These processes can either be beneficial or detrimental to group performance.

Several teams that play the game League of Legends, were tested for collective intelligence. It was found that a teams collective intelligence was a significant factor in their performance in the game.
