Collective response to the media coverage of COVID-19 Pandemic on Reddit and Wikipedia Data Analysis
- Used linear regression and nonnegative matrix factorization (NMF) to apply different topics and varying levels of exposure to study the responses to media exposure
- The 3 models had the independent variables of incidence, news, and news & memory of news respectively
- After comparing Wikipedia page and article views with the continued progression of Covid-19, it can be concluded that even though the pandemic has not slowed down, media coverage has, which resulted in less time spent on news outlets and sites like Wikipedia for updated information on Covid-19
- It can be inferred that public opinion is influenced primarily by news coverage and public attention is not correlated with the severity of the virus
- Linear regression models highlight that media and people’s memories from media coverage play the largest role in shaping public attention
