Comparison

Constant vs. Variable MRT on Linear and Curved Feasible Frontiers

The shape of a feasible frontier determines the nature of its Marginal Rate of Transformation (MRT). For a linear frontier, such as Karim's in Unit 3, the MRT is constant at all points, indicating a fixed trade-off. In contrast, for a curved frontier like Angela's, the MRT is variable. Specifically, as Angela takes more free time, her MRT increases, meaning the opportunity cost of an additional hour of free time—measured in the amount of grain she must forgo—becomes higher.
