Comparison of Modeled Rebound and Pre-1970s Ice Stability

The self-correcting rebound of sea ice towards the high-ice equilibrium in the Environmental Dynamics Curve model is analogous to the observed stability of the Arctic sea ice prior to 1970. As suggested by data in Figure 8.25, before the recent period of accelerated decline, the ice sheet demonstrated a similar resilience, maintaining its large extent despite temporary environmental variations.
