Conclusion of Separate but Equal Study

This study sought out to show that Amazon MTurk provided:

  • high quality data
  • diversity
  • behavioral tasks that can be completed online just as thoroughly as in-person

All of these initial hypotheses were supported by the data found by the study.

Another benefit of MTurk was the efficiency compared to in-person sampling, and even social media sampling, as well as the competitive wage that allowed the HIT to fill up fast. Additionally, MTurk has a rating system for workers based on their performance on tasks (whether they skip questions, meaningless keystrokes), that allow researchers to pick solid participants.

Overall, the study concludes that with caution, behavioral experiments can take place just as well online as they can in-person.
