Nobel laureate Angus Deaton has observed that childhood deprivation in India at the end of British administration in 1947 may have been among the most severe in recorded history. Briefly explain how a major shift in a country's economic structure, from being a primary producer of manufactured goods to an agriculture-centric economy, could lead to such an extreme outcome for its population.
