Short Answer

Consistency of Household Work Arrangements

A couple agrees to two principles for managing their household: 1) they will share all consumption equally, regardless of who earns the income, and 2) they will contribute an equal amount of total work time, which is the sum of hours in paid employment and unpaid domestic labor.

Consider a scenario where one partner works 10 hours per day in paid employment and performs 2 hours of unpaid domestic labor. The other partner works 4 hours per day in paid employment and performs 8 hours of unpaid domestic labor.

Analyze this scenario and determine if this arrangement is consistent with the couple's two principles. Justify your conclusion for each principle.
