Concept
Context B: Mental Health Care - The "What If" (Critical Reflection)
Bottema-Beutel posits that if mental health care were not dependent on the identification of a "doctorable" condition, the interactions between caregivers and clinicians would play out much differently. She notes that these negotiations are driven by histories that have traditionally blamed parents for childhood conditions, such as the theories of Bettelheim. Consequently, she suggests that clinicians must critically engage with their own role in constructing these conditions to transform clinical practice and conceptualizations of mental health.
