Control conditions range from text attribution (sentiment, topic, keywords) to author style (gender, age), text genre and format (poems, couplets), event ordering (story lines), or structured data description.

A control condition is an experimental baseline group in which participants do not receive the active treatment or intervention being tested. Researchers compare the outcomes of this untreated group to those in the treatment condition to ascertain if the intervention successfully produced a positive change.

A no-treatment control condition is a specific type of baseline group in an experiment where participants receive absolutely no intervention. While it offers a direct comparison to evaluate a treatment's effectiveness, a major flaw with this approach is its vulnerability to placebo effects, as it does not account for the benefits produced by participants simply expecting to improve.

No-Treatment Control Condition

A placebo control condition is an experimental group where participants receive a simulated intervention that lacks the active ingredient of the actual treatment but appears identical to it. By providing both the treatment and control groups with the expectation of improvement, any additional progress observed in the treatment group can be confidently attributed to the active ingredients rather than placebo effects.

Placebo Control Condition

A wait-list control condition is an experimental setup where participants are informed they will receive the intervention, but must wait until those in the primary treatment condition have already completed it. This approach enables researchers to compare outcomes between participants who have received the treatment and those who are currently untreated but maintain the expectation that they will eventually improve.

Sham surgery is a simulated surgical procedure used as a rigorous control condition to evaluate the true efficacy of an operation. In a notable study on osteoarthritis of the knee, control participants received a tranquilizer and small incisions but no actual procedure. These participants demonstrated physiological improvements in knee pain and function equal to those who received the real arthroscopic surgery, powerfully illustrating that physiological disorders can be positively impacted by the placebo effect.

An alternative to using a standard control condition is to compare a new experimental intervention directly against the best available alternative treatment. Because participants in both groups receive an active treatment, their expectations for improvement remain similar, successfully controlling for placebo effects while also addressing the practical question of whether the new treatment outperforms existing clinical standards.
