Converting 0.51, 1.25, and 0.093 to Percents

Convert each decimal to a percent by shifting the decimal point two places to the right and attaching the %\% sign:

(a) 0.510.51: Move the decimal point two places to the right — from between the 00 and the 55, past the 55, past the 11 — giving 5151. Therefore, 0.51=51%0.51 = 51\%.

(b) 1.251.25: Move the decimal point two places to the right — from between the 11 and the 22, past the 22, past the 55 — giving 125125. Because the original decimal is greater than 11, the resulting percent exceeds 100%100\%. Therefore, 1.25=125%1.25 = 125\%.

(c) 0.0930.093: Move the decimal point two places to the right — from between the 00 and the 00, past the 00, past the 99 — giving 9.39.3. The result still contains a decimal portion because 0.0930.093 is less than one-tenth. Therefore, 0.093=9.3%0.093 = 9.3\%.
