Converting Between the US and Metric Systems

Because the US customary and metric systems define their units independently, converting between them requires approximate conversion factors that relate a unit from one system to a unit from the other. The most commonly used equivalences are:

Length:

  • 11 inch 2.54\approx 2.54 centimeters
  • 11 foot 0.305\approx 0.305 meters
  • 11 yard 0.914\approx 0.914 meters
  • 11 mile 1.61\approx 1.61 kilometers
  • 11 meter 3.28\approx 3.28 feet

Weight / Mass:

  • 11 pound 0.45\approx 0.45 kilograms
  • 11 kilogram 2.2\approx 2.2 pounds
  • 11 ounce 28\approx 28 grams

Capacity:

  • 11 quart 0.95\approx 0.95 liters
  • 11 fluid ounce 30\approx 30 milliliters
  • 11 liter 1.06\approx 1.06 quarts

Everyday measuring tools — such as rulers, measuring cups, and bathroom scales — often display both US and metric markings side by side, making it easy to see these equivalences in practice. The conversion procedure is the same dimensional-analysis technique used for within-system conversions: multiply the given measurement by a conversion factor that cancels the original unit and introduces the desired unit.
